Vector Realism – Rawlings baseball glove

Japan -

Vector mastermind Highside has “kicked it up a knotch”. Her vector illustration has a sense of realism that is just incredible. Take a close look at the details on this Rawlings glove. The colour is spot on, but it’s the creases in the leather and the texture of the laces that have us baffled. How did she do it?

Take a look at her process here:

HALLE BERRY – Ultra-realistic vector portrait

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada -

Wayne Forest is nothing short of a vector art master. His gradient mesh portraits are astounding.
This is a portrait of the one and only Halle Berry. It’s not an easy task to create a portrait of such a well known beauty, but Wayne has just nailed it.

Here are a few words from the artist:

“I reside in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, the hidden Jem…well now that I have said it publicly, no I wasn’t born here? Having lived in BC, AB, Man, Ont and NB, Nova Scotia is by far the place to be. What was the worst of the lot, well that’s easy, Alberta, I’m not in to dictators. However the annual bribes were nice…nothing like getting ones own money back to subsides the corporations, what ever. Just one more note I have been in every part of Canada for the exception of Newfoundland, and that will change soon I hope. World traveling, I have been to most of Europe, South East Asia, Middle East, Africa and of course North America. Yep Alberta’s still on the bottom of the list:)

As for my interest in CG that goes quite a ways back but having no knowledge of what was possible or with what to use didn’t help. Having just finished up 21 years in the Canadian Military I am now moving towards learning everything possible in regards to CG. Adobe has really peaked my interest there for I was fortunate enough to get formal training in some of the products. Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere and played with Indesign. However Quark covered that area nicely and I continue to maintain productive in it. Having taken training with Swift3D I have decided to go the next level and am presently doing a year long course within 3DS Max. It definitely has proven to be a great challenge having never worked with anything like it.”

Mark Westberg – vector vehicle artist

Mark Westberg is from Minnesota, USA. He has an interest in motorcycles, airplanes, and nudes. They are all created in vector, but have an airbrushed painted quality applied to them. Especially the airplane images below. They have a hyperreal detail, while using depth of field, and blur techniques to simulate motion. Look at the blur on the propeller at the bottom right. The artist also creates atmospheric lighting with the sunset backgrounds. The motorcycle is made from flat shapes. If you look at the left rim you can see where some noticeable shapes were left.

Oleg Rogoznev – from Russia with love

Russia -

Oleg Rogoznev is a Russian artist with a really impressive craft when it comes to design of realistic vector images. His work takes on hyperreal qualities by focusing on extreme detail (see “The Flower” below, at the left hand side). In the “Still life” (below right) he uses subjective lighting. In the “Large eye” he captures realistic detail, while allowing some of hair and skin elements to show through as simplified vectors. You can visit his portfolio for further works.

Chris Nielsen – Vector Motorcycle Artist

Chris Nielsen has a passion for two things: red hot American motorcycles and vector art. The combination of the two has caught the eyes of a few ANCHORPOINT members who demanded that we put the spotlight on his work. Your wish is our command. Here are a few words from the artist:

chris_nielson_vectorvault_1.gif

“My name is Chris Nielsen. I am a part-time computer graphics instructor in southern California. My specialty is using the digital medium of the computer to create visual art. My personal emphasis is in the subject of digital drawings of Motorcycle portraits. I have an MFA Degree in the area of illustration, with an emphasis on computer art. I received my Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cal State Fullerton.

With my NEW Motorcycle Illustrations, I work STRICTLY in Adobe Illustrator. My work is completely made up of flat-colored shapes… lots and lots of them! I DO NOT work with any types of Filters or Special Effects. I like the process of developing a realistic look in my illustrations with totally flat colors and abstract shapes.I define the Visual Style of my Motorcycle work as “Stylized Realism”.As for my images… well, I usually go with what appeals to me visually. In other words, I draw what I like to look at. I will be honest. I don’t know the first thing about how a motorcycle works. I have never even sat on a motorcycle. But, I do know that there is nothing (in my opinion) more exciting for me, as an artist, than to see all those wonderful little details in the construction of these amazing machines!I hold the designers and craftsmen who build these bikes in the highest regard for the obvious talents they show off. The artistic design, craftsmanship and flawless construction of the bikes I create my portraits from is an art form in itself that I admire and pay tribute to in my own work.I choose to work on portraits of motorcycles that you and I do not have the privilege of viewing on a daily basis. I do not focus on the whole motorcycle either. I prefer to crop in on those amazing and complicated, little parts and focus on those relationships. Those are the portraits I like to draw… simply because it’s a challenge to me… and they’re fun to look at and talk about.” -Chris Nielsen

HENKE SVENSSON – Shaken not stirred

Sweden

Liquid has got to be one of the most difficult things to master in vector art. Light bends and distorts reflections in ways that the human mind has a hard time understanding. When an artist attempts to emulate liquid and misses something the human eye will catch it immediately. Now imagine that process one point at a time. Henke Svensson has taken his art to a photographic level. Here are a few of his best examples.

BERT MONROY – Damen

Berkeley, California -

Bert Monroy is a modern master. We have followed his career for some time now. But it is this piece entitled “Damen” that in our humble opinion is the crown jewel of the Photoshop world. Take a look at this masterpiece here.

This is an incredible digital painting of a Chicago scene unveiled at Photoshop World in Miami on March 22, 2006.We were so inspired by the detail and realism of this piece that we could not believe that it was not a photo. It is a panorama of the Damen Station on the Blue Line of the Chicago Transit AuthorityAdobe Illustrator was used for generating the majority of the basic shapes as well as all the buildings in the Chicago skyline. The rest was created in Photoshop.
