Say what you want about the 80’s, it certainly spawned some of the most imaginative films. But few lit up the minds of young people like TRON. It was literally ahead of it’s time, grappling with a concept like virtual reality. Who could have known how relevant it would become.
This was my first introduction to the world of vector art. Crisp, perfect mathematical objects that moved gracefully across the screen. Vibrant, glowing colour and a seemingly tangible landscape. As a young boy, I knew the difference between animation and reality. But I was convinced that I could reach out and touch it.
Tron took inspiration from other vector based video games like asteroids, battlezone, and Star Wars. And pushed it’s art direction into a neon palette set against darkness. It was the first full length computer animated motion picture, but as you can see by any 5 year old’s dvd collection today- it was not the last.

Hatsune Miku is one of the biggest pop stars in all of Japan. Shes also a virtual avatar created by Crypton Media using Yamahas Vocaloid voice synthesizer. That right. You heard what I said – She’s a hologram!
Check out this live concert performance of “Promise”. A track that only a robot could love. Hypnotic and annoying all rolled into one. Turn DOWN your speakers if you have any consideration for those around you. But open your eyes to the future of “live” music (unfortunately).
Oh Japan, is there nothing that you can’t do?
