The recent influx of AI (artificial Intelligence) generated art has had a profound effect on me. For 30 years, my digital art has allowed me to stand out. For customers and clients, my work was considered nothing short of magic. Now with AI, anyone can download a magic wand – and abracadabra – become a digital artist instantly.
No, this is not a phase or a trend. And no, AI is not just another tool. It is a shift in the art world as we know it. Don’t believe me? Check back in on this post a year from now and you tell me. It’s already challenging enough to stand out in the NFT community. Now we have to compete against the combined recorded art history of mankind. Humans don’t make this “art”. Robots do. Human’s merely describe a request and accept credit for it’s creation. That’s not art. That’s art direction.
And who is ushering in this new age? People. The ones that either can’t tell the difference or don’t care to. I have even observed talented artists use AI to up their volume and quality. Don’t fool yourself, that’s not you. It’s about as akin to art as ordering take out. Quick and tasty. But let’s face it, you did not cook it up. A chef did. One with access to an infinite cookbook. Recipes concocted from chefs of the past. AI allows you to stand on the shoulders of giants. Instantly. Something about that is wrong.
I often hear AI described as “just another tool”. It’s not. Photoshop is a tool. A paintbrush is a tool. This tool is using us.
