Regalia: Nine Stories By Eliza Frye

August 11, 2011 by Adam Jarvis Leave a Comment

Another treat brought to our attention by our friends at NOTCOT. Eliza Frye has decided to make a book of 9 short stories she has created and depending on your pledge amount you are in for a number of treats.

“Regalia is a collection of nine short stories, my best personal work from the past four years. Some of the stories have been previously published and some are brand new. They are all love letters:
“The Lady’s Murder” – a mystery unraveling the untimely death of the infamous Miss Marie Madeleine (Eisner nominated)
“Horse and Rider” – a surreal Western love tale at the Cinderella Motel
“Lucky House” – a father, a daughter, a snake, and a white tiger
“I Can See Your Underpants” – featuring ladies’ unmentionables and inappropriate breakfasting
“Footsteps” – a story about edges of all variety
“Regalia” – you wouldn’t want a 900 year-old fox on your back porch either
“Paul” – a journey off the edge of a cliff
“Gods:Monsters” – originally published in the “Peaches & Cream” edition of Flaunt magazine
“Eternity” – originally published by me at Kinkos using a copy card I, um, found in the parking lot”

“The finished book will be about 200 pages long in full color. Each one will be hand stamped and come with a hand screen printed bookplate. I decided to print in China because it’s about 50% cheaper than anywhere else, though it will take roughly three months for the books to arrive. My production budget comes out to about $6000 total. That’s covering printing, shipping, and an ISBN and bar code for 2000 books. I’m aiming for a charming softcover volume, but of course if things go fantastically well I’ll make the book as beautiful and brilliant and hardbound as it can be.
Most of the stories are on my website: http://elizafrye.com/“

About the Artist:

“My name is Eliza Frye and I make comics. I approach my work the same way I approach my love letters. My stories have been featured in literary magazines and anthologies in the United States and Europe, and my short story “The Lady’s Murder” was nominated for a 2009 Eisner Award. I studied Character Animation at California Institute of the Arts and have a BA in Japanese Literature from UCLA. I use that degree every day. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, dancing, and earl grey, hot.”

Loved the video promotion and she is very close to reaching her goal! Support Eliza here.

Typography Book – Just My Type

October 1, 2010 by Adam Jarvis Leave a Comment

Just My Type, originally uploaded by Stewf.

In my hands now, an advance copy of “Just My Type” by Simon Garfield, a book I helped edit while I was in Stockholm this summer.

It’s a fun-filled romp through the world of letters, mostly for the layman, but with some history and inside stories many experts may not know. Good for type lovers to give to friends and family to prove how interesting and varied type can be. Garfield is a good writer. And I’m not just saying that because there’s a chapter on type specimens in which our team at FontShop plays a central role. I mean, he wrote an enjoyable book about the color mauve — you know he’s good.

Vector Book Reco – Adobe Illustrator CS5 Classroom in a Book

September 30, 2010 by Adam Jarvis 1 Comment

“Illustrator is Adobe’s oldest app, going back to 1987. What’s called “Illustrator CS5″ is actually Illustrator 15. In September of 2003, when Adobe released its original Creative Suite collection, Illustrator shared a common user interface (UI) with Photoshop and InDesign. Though many of the tools and panels in many of the CS5 apps look and operate similarly, each app has it’s own hidden power. It seems to us that there’s more power hiding in Adobe Illustrator (Ai) than any other app in the Master Collection.”

Adobe Illustrator CS5 Classroom in a Book seems to be one of the highest rated instructional books on the market for this software. It’s language is easy to follow and it’s laced with colourful illustrations and screen captures. If you are a little daunted by the application, this book should give you a real confidence boost.
An excellent companion for any designer of any level as well.

Vector Book: Threadless: Ten Years of T-shirts

Threadless is an incredible t-shirt juggernaut. They single handedly re-invented the way that we design, consume and market the most popular apparel in the world.

Creativity by the book

Jake Nickell (the founder of Threadless) has compiled some of the best examples from the past decade. Check it out.

Threadless.com is the phenomenally successful T-shirt company with millions and millions of tees sold since it began in 2000. It pioneered the online business model of crowd-sourced or community-driven design, in which people submit designs that are voted on by the site’s 1 million users and printed. Over the past 10 years, the company has amassed a vast archive of very cool, very hip, and often very entertaining designs, and Threadless is a spectacular showcase of 400 of the very best T-shirts created by the community–a barometer of art and design over the past decade.

Much more than a book of extraordinary graphics, Threadless tells the extremely interesting story that inspired Inc. magazine to hail Threadless.com as “the most innovative small company in America.” There are also profiles of individual designers and “think pieces” from influential admirers, including design guru John Maeda, Jeff Howe of Wired, and bestselling business/marketing writer Seth Godin.

Vector Book Review: Logo Lounge 5

2000 International Identities

Logo Lounge is one of my favourite book series. Primarily, because I spend a great deal of time pumping out logos for various projects.
No matter how good you are, you can always use some inspiration. This series always delivers. If you are building a design library, this is a great place to start.
Volume 5 boasts over 2,000 identities from all over the world. The design of the book is sleek and made for reference. Highly recommended.

“The fifth volume in the best-selling LogoLounge series provides 2,000 totally new logos from designers worldwide. This book, like the previous titles in the series, is compiled in association with LogoLounge.com, a website that was launched by Bill Gardner in 2002. The site is dedicated to logos. Top designers and design firms are handpicked and invited to be “foundation members.” Foundation and website members each supply multiple logos to the site. Each LogoLounge book presents new logos that have been added to the site, providing designers with an invaluable source for design inspiration and a resource for design solutions.”

Vector Book Review – Neubau Welt

A Design library must

A few years ago I stumbled upon this book Neubau Welt at Swipe books in Toronto. I did not know it at the time, but it was the seed that spawned Vectorvault . The quality of this collection is incredible. Each vector has been carefully crafted and catalogued in this handsome book with a disc.
This is a must have for anyone who loves vector art. A diamond in a world of coal. It contains 1247 editable vector files. 304 pages of pure gold.

Detailed Vector Clip Art

Neubau Welt is an extensive encyclopedia of well over a thousand editable vector illustrations of everyday objects and obsessions large and small. They were created by designer Stefan Gandl and his Neubau team. Gandl’s previous book DSOS1 was also published by dgv and has since become a collectors’ item. All of the objects shown in the book can also be found as editable and highly detailed Macromedia Freehand and Adobe Illlustrator files on an included CD. For the price of the book, readers also buy the exclusive rights to exclusive graphics and three Neubau typefaces (NB55RLS, NBBlatt, NBUrban).Reminiscent of a digital Letraset, Neubau Welt contains everything any designer could possibly need but couldn’t find on Google. Unlike ClipArt, the smorgasbord of objects can be enlarged indefinitely. This also makes them extremely useful for architects and other creatives, who can integrate them into their presentations and visual models.

Inspiring Vectors

This book really did spark something inside of me. It made me look at silhouettes in a different way. And showed me the beauty in details that some of us take for granted. It’s a great addition to any studio, but I also think that it would rock as a coffee table book. I know my friends love looking through it.
