The truth about Facebook? • WATCH VIDEO

February 18, 2009 by Adam Jarvis 2 Comments

There have been many rumors about Facebook floating around over the last few years. Some believe that it has a sinister motivation while others look at it as a true internet success story. There is no doubt that it has reshaped the way we communicate with each other.
How many friends do you have that you only see there? How much information do you know about people you would otherwise be uninterested in? But more importantly: who else is watching?

I accepted a friend request from an old high school acquaintance about a year ago. Recently, I saw him at a distance (in reality) and we both pretended not to see each other. I’m still seeing his updates and pictures. I’m not going to lie to you – I am embarrassed to admit that. Since when did I become submerged in virtual relationships and how have I changed as a person as a result of it?

Vishal Agarwala’s video examines Facebook’s relationships, partnerships and privacy policies. It may want you to think twice about what you wish Big Brother to know about you:

We continue (for now) to hold a Facebook group. Feel free to join and voice your opinions there (or at least the ones that you don’t mind exposing to “the man”).
Since this article was posted, Facebook released this message on their site:

“Over the past few days, we have received a lot of feedback about the new terms we posted two weeks ago. Because of this response, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised. For more information, visit the Facebook Blog.
If you want to share your thoughts on what should be in the new terms, check out our group Facebook Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.”

What do you think?

This video has really made me think about my own activity online. Is it paranoid to think that my actions on the web are of interest to someone else? I would like to hear someone else’s opinion.

It looks like someone at Facebook is hitting the “revert key” on their privacy policy. Read this:
